False intruder alarms are disruptive, could cost you money and cause a nuisance to your neighbours. But most importantly, they could prevent the emergency services from responding to a real emergency. Also, an excessive number of false alarms can potentially result in any police response being withdrawn, which could be disastrous in a genuine situation.

If you have an intruder alarm at your business, following our 11 tips will help avoid any false alarms.

11 tips to avoid false intruder alarms

  1. The alarm system should only be operated by people who’ve been correctly trained. If you’re unsure about the operation of your alarm, please contact your alarm company immediately.
  2. Before leaving the premises, check that all windows and doors are secured. A physical check is the only way to prevent false alarms.
  3. Ensure that detection devices are not obstructed. In particular, be careful that infrared beams and space detectors are not obstructed by furniture/stock or hanging decorations.
  4. Don’t introduce sources of heat, movement or sound into areas protected by detection devices without informing your alarm company.
  5. Always follow the entry/exit procedure agreed upon with the surveyor or installation engineer. Don’t allow entry through any door other than that designated. Make switching the alarm off your first priority upon entry.
  6. Ensure that all keys necessary to enter the premises are readily available and that code numbers/proximity tags, where applicable, are to hand before entry.
  7. Inform your alarm company of any alteration to your premises which may affect your alarm system. Don’t permit persons other than your alarm company’s engineers to make changes to the alarm system. And place your system on “test” during building alterations.
  8. Treat your system with care. Wiring and detection devices can be accidentally damaged or moved. If this occurs, inform your alarm company immediately.
  9. After a false alarm, check the system carefully and where possible, note the cause of activation. Inform your alarm company of the reason for activation as soon as possible.
  10. Make sure regular maintenance is carried out and that you have the correct contact details for your alarm company and the Alarm Receiving Centre.
  11. Most intruder alarm systems require a mains electricity supply. If the electricity to your system is disconnected for more than 4 hours, inform your alarm security company.

Following these 11 tips will go a long way in preventing false alarms and ensuring that your premises will continue to receive police attendance when necessary.
